- Ladykirk, West Learmouth, & Hendersyde must be for those who enjoy boat fishing and all the service that goes with it, although they do all have bank fishing as well. They are ideal for anyone who is not a good walker, who would like constant advice and help from gillies. However don't go for too long if you dislike large rivers or boats!
- Bemersyde & Ravenswood are probably the most interesting of the beats I let, as they combine excellent fishing with stunning scenery. However don't go if you can't manage the wading and walking, or some form of Spey or roll casting. Lower Pavilion is also a lovely beat to fish. Boleside has the advantage of good summer fishing, as well as its prodigous catches in the autumn.
- Fairnilee is the best of the Upper beats and is in beautiful country with varied water, and fishermen are very loyal to it. Most of the access is reasonably good, but there are one or two awkward places, which you may have to avoid if you have difficulty walking.
- The remaining Upper beats will usually do best in November, but will also do very well in October if they get medium to high water conditions. If you want ease of walking and casting try Traquair, and Glenormiston and for a few economic days in the autumn, try Peel.
- Disabled fishers are welcome at Ladykirk, at non peak times. The beat has access to a winch and has a boat that can take a wheel chair.
