Horncliffe's fishing consists of two-and-a-half miles of single bank fishing on the right (south) bank of the Tweed. The upper limit
of the fishing is at Norham Castle and the lower limit is at Horncliffe Mill Burn mouth, approximately six miles inland from Berwick
upon Tweed. The fishing is divided into four beats.
Horncliffe, like the adjoining Ladykirk fishings, is essentially a low water beat which fishes best at heights below one foot. The
lower water below St Thomas's Island in particular is reached by high spring tides and although this may affect the fishing, it has
the great advantage that in low water conditions fish will build up throughout the whole length of the fishing. Grilse and sea trout
can be caught in the early morning and in the evening in the hottest summer days.
Six rods fish until 17th August (of which two are syndicate rods), although there will be an additional two house rods on very
occasional Saturdays. From 18th August, the four beats are fished by eight rods (two per beat). A rota system operates with rods
changing beats at lunchtime. Two of the rods are retained by the proprietors who participate in the rota system.
There are four boats provided although the majority of fish are caught from the bank. Long stretches of water offer easily wadeable
fishing over smooth gravel. Other stretches with rocky shelves are more difficult to wade but here the fish lie quite close into the
bank.
A comfortable fishing hut is equipped with a gas fire, small refrigerator and cooking rings, together with barbecue facilities and
adequate car parking spaces.
